Copywriter / Social Media Coordinator
We are looking for a Copywriter / Social Media Coordinator for our growing digital agency. We are open to either full-time, part-time or remote working arrangements. The priority is that we find someone who is a good fit with our team and someone who is willing to learn new skills to improve their craft.
To make our search for the “perfect” team member (and your search for the “perfect” job) as efficient as possible, we’ve clearly set out in this job posting what this position is all about. This job is not for everyone, but it will be the “perfect” job for someone. We respect openness and honesty, so we would like you to be realistic about your level of experience and skills. Your attitude and willingness to learn are key traits for this role.
We acknowledge that everyone is on a different journey, and we are open to a conversation with you if you have a background in traditional media, journalism, or other communication roles besides marketing. If you are willing to learn and work hard to hone your skills, we will support you all the way through internal mentorship and learning opportunities.
Please read the entire posting. It’s longer than most job descriptions because we want you to understand this opportunity clearly. Instructions on how to apply are at the end.
About the Position
There are two main components to this position:
Well-written copy that focuses on persuasion and emotions is at the core of the content marketing services we provide to our clients. The primary goal of copywriting is to drive action, typically through a purchase, sign-up, or engagement. Since you only have a few seconds to grab your reader’s attention, breaking down complex and often technical information into a message that resonates with your audience is crucial. Sometimes, you must distill a complex message into only a few words.
From our experience, it is possible to be a good content writer but not a good copywriter. So ask yourself, which category do I fall into, and am I willing to invest in myself to develop my copywriting skills further?
2. Social Media
Social Media is one of the channels we use to get the message to our audience. We believe in quality content over quantity. Good copywriting skills will help you craft clear, compelling messages that resonate with the target audience.
As our Social Media Coordinator, you are responsible for working with our clients directly on their Social Media strategies and content calendars. You should also be familiar with the different social media platforms, including scheduling posts, responding to messages/comments and monitoring post activity. As a copywriter for Social Media, you will reflect the tone of voice and the brand of our customers.
Work Environment and Team Culture
Our roots are in Alberta, and we know the value of respect, honesty and hard work. We are down-to-earth and can be serious, but we also have a sense of humour.
We look to our team and customers as human beings and partners and always try to see the best in people. But we have high standards about our work and are proud of it.
We enjoy working independently and as a team and take ownership of our work. We offer a hybrid work environment where work is done from our office in Lacombe and remotely from home. We started this during COVID-19 and liked it so much we continue. We are open to discussing how your unique work situation can be accommodated if needed, but we see the value of building a close relationship with the rest of the team.
Work days are from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday, but there is flexibility in the time of day you work as long as the work gets done and you are available to our team and clients for meetings.
We value work-life balance and recognize the importance of time off work. Our official vacation policy is that after your probation period, vacation days are flexible. In practice, this means that we rarely deny requested vacation days as long as we know that the work gets done and our customers are happy.
Compensation and Benefits
Initially, compensation will entirely depend on your skills and experience. You can expect an annual salary between C$50K and C$70K per year. We like to pay for performance, so there will be regular reviews, and we will change your salary based on your performance.
We are a dedicated group of professionals on a mission to eradicate bad marketing and help our small business clients succeed through better marketing. Our satisfaction comes from building websites and providing marketing services that will add value to our customers. These are some of the perks of working at EDGE.
- Exciting Variety: You'll have the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients across various industries, expanding your skills and knowledge.
- Growth Potential: We are committed to your professional development and will provide ongoing training and mentorship to help you sharpen your skills and advance your career.
- Creative Freedom: We value your ideas, allowing you to experiment and innovate to give our clients the best return on their investment.
- Collaborative Culture: At EDGE, you'll be part of a supportive team that fosters a positive work environment.
- Impactful Work: Your words will make a difference by influencing and inspiring audiences and helping our clients achieve their business objectives.
This is where you should be honest with yourself, do some reflection, or ask a trusted friend or family member if you are the right fit for this job.
To succeed in this job, you should not be interested in “only getting a paycheck” but in developing your skills and career, making a positive contribution to EDGE’s customers, and constantly improving results.
You'll also understand the challenges of working in a small business and welcome them as valuable opportunities to grow.
Your strongest competency should be working independently and completing your work on time, with minimal supervision, and with high excellence.
You love to see a job through from start to finish and deliver outstanding results for clients, and you do not get frustrated with project changes but rather thrive on managing multiple projects and tasks at the same time.
You are self-motivated and can handle the pressures of a fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment. You can work independently based on clearly defined responsibilities and processes and prioritize your time and workload without extensive supervision. You are task-driven and keep going when faced with challenges.
You are highly detail-oriented and like to use a structured approach using tools and systems. You probably have a good memory and use techniques to track information in detail so that it's available when you need it.
You are resourceful in finding what you need to get the job done after being trained on where to look. In our online world, being curious and always learning new ways of doing things is essential. We want to learn new ways of doing things from you.
You are positive, with an optimistic, can-do attitude and a sense of humour. You show kindness, patience, and respect to all human beings. You are ethical and honest, and you do the right thing even when no one is watching.
You accept feedback well and seek solutions, not excuses. You are resourceful and a problem solver, not just a reporter.
You have a writing, journalism or digital marketing background and are eager to expand your skills. You enjoy working with online tools, e.g. Google Docs, Basecamp, Canva, AI content tools, and social media management tools, to name a few. You are open to learning the use of other online tools and platforms. Your keyboard and basic computer skills are excellent. You also have excellent time management and organizational skills.
These are some essential skills that we are looking for:
- Exceptional Writing Skills: You possess the ability to write engaging, persuasive, and error-free content that captivates readers and compels them to take action.
- Versatility: You thrive on adapting your writing style to match the tone, style, and brand voice of different clients and industries.
- Creativity: You have a knack for generating fresh ideas and crafting unique angles that make content stand out.
- Social Media Savviness: You are well-versed in various social media platforms, understanding the nuances of each and how to optimize content for maximum impact.
- Multi-tasking: You can manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting the occasional tight deadlines without compromising quality.
- Team Player: You thrive in a collaborative environment, embracing feedback and working closely with designers, strategists, and clients to bring ideas to life.
- Communication skills: You are comfortable and confident communicating with team members and clients. You excel at building relationships and are a person of trust to our clients.
Your Work Ethic
If you're like us, you enjoy working and are grateful for opportunities to use your talents and skills to make a positive influence and earn a living. You understand that you are not getting paid just for showing up at work but for how you spend your time at work. You understand that everybody in our company must contribute to making it successful and profitable. This means that you are careful about using your time for the business, and not for checking personal emails, social media, or surfing the web.
We have extremely high standards for the quality of our work, and our clients stay with us because of it.
We will provide you with all the learning you need, but no one likes micro-management. We want you to be a contributing team member, not just a worker. We want to give you autonomy and let you be free to do your work and what you enjoy doing.
Your responsibilities will be diverse but also clearly spelled out. We will challenge you to learn new things but never throw you in the deep end without clear direction and support. We will start with clear tasks in these areas of digital marketing:
- Writing content and marketing messages using our messaging framework based on Storybrand for blogs, websites and email campaigns.
- Copywriting for advertising and sales letters.
- Develop content calendars in collaboration with the client, and then write marketing copy and coordinate media (images, video, etc.).
- Edit and optimize copy for Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Develop sales copy for Google Ads and Facebook advertising
- Write SEO tags for websites based on keyword research
